What fraction of a cake is left over when you eat 3/8 of it? Suppose that a cake is baked by Tom and Sam and each of them eats a third of it. After all, a third of a cake is 1/3 of the original cake. So, what fraction of a cake is left over when three people each eat a third of the cake?
To find out how much cake remains after eating 3/8 of it, cut the cake into eighths. For example, if there are 8 pieces of cake, each friend gets an eighth. If there are eight pieces of cake, one of each friend gets a half of the cake. After all, one eighth of the cake is leftover, but it is still only a quarter of a third of the cake.
